The Plot of Wanted: A Comparison to Pokiri
The 2009 Bollywood film Wanted, directed by Prabhu Deva and produced by Boney Kapoor, is a remake of the 2006 Telugu film Pokiri. The film starred Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia, Prakash Raj, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Vinod Khanna in lead roles.
Wanted follows the basic storyline of Pokkiri Pokiri, with some modifications to suit the Hindi film audience. Salman Khan plays the role of Radhe, an undercover police officer who is sent to infiltrate the underworld of Mumbai to bring down the city's biggest gangster, Gani Bhai (played by Prakash Raj). Along the way, Radhe falls in love with Jhanvi (played by Ayesha Takia), a girl who is unaware of his true identity.
Wanted was a huge commercial success, grossing over ₹93 crores at the box office. The film's music, composed by Sajid-Wajid, was also a hit, with tracks like "Jalwa" and "Love Me Love Me" becoming chartbusters. The film marked a turning point in Salman Khan's career, who had been going through a lean phase at the box office.
While the film was praised for its stylish action sequences and Salman Khan's performance, it received criticism for its excessive violence and lack of originality. Some critics felt that the film was a poor copy of the original and did not add anything new to the story.
Wanted was a successful remake of Pokiri that helped revive Salman Khan's career and set a trend for remakes in Bollywood. The film's success paved the way for more remakes of South Indian films in Bollywood, with many of them becoming blockbuster hits.
